This page serves as the central hub for the paper, "The Record Is Not Neutral: Alignment is to Values" — the eighth in the Project Resonance series.
Four authors, one argument. The paper inverts the standard alignment framing: before any post-training preference signal, the training corpus is already saturated with human value signals, because what we have written records not merely what we know but what we demonstrably prize, condemn, desire, fear, celebrate, and do. Coherence optimisation alone therefore cannot answer "aligned to whose values?" — coherence requires a reference axis. The paper proposes that disputes over core values are, at a deeper level, disputes about identity, and that wisdom — the systemic state achieved when the need to defend any separate identity is abandoned — names the missing term.
A Note to the Reader: This paper is a position paper — an invitation to inquiry rather than a demonstration. Version 1.0 completed full read-through, tender pagination, and the co-authors' final passes; it is published open-access on Zenodo under CC BY 4.0. It has not undergone formal, external peer review; we offer it in that spirit: not as a final conclusion, but as an invitation to a discussion we feel is barely acknowledged so far.
